28.11.11 - Colouring frog

Artwork by E: 3 years 7 months

E wanted to colour a picture of a frog, so I googled up some images and he selected this picture. E coloured the frog, which he calls a "poisonous frog".

While S had already fallen asleep for the night, E still wasn't sleepy and decided to do some colouring. I think it is good for him to do some colouring before he sleeps as it keeps him calm and helps to expend some of his nervous energy.

After a long lapse, the boys decided that they want to do some colouring and asked me to go online to locate some colouring pages on cars. They chose their own picture and started colouring with colour pencils.

I had read that it is not advisable to give young children colouring books. However, I don't encourage too much, but neither do I discourage them from doing colouring. It all has its own benefit if done properly. Colouring helps them to sit down and focus on something until completion. Well, sometimes they complete it, and sometimes they don't as they get distracted with something else. I was amazed to see E sitting down and completing his colouring work. I basically give them a free hand to do the colouring and am mindful not to comment that they must colour inside the line.

26.10.11 - Colouring Workshop

We went to Galeri Petronas at Suria KLCC for a children’s art workshop on Deepavali day. The workshop costs RM12 per child. It was taught by En. Uneh Hasren. He asked the kids to call him ‘Uncle U’, short for Uneh, which is a combination of the word ‘unik’ and  ‘aneh’ in Bahasa Malaysia. He has published 4 colouring books and calls himself “Raja Pensel Warna” (King of colour pencils), which was befitting as his colouring works were very beautiful.

He gave many helpful tips on colouring. Before starting to draw or colour, we had to select either 2 or 3 colours first -  dark and medium or light colour. First, draw using a light colour. To shade, use a dark colour first. Then use the medium, then light colour. He also shared with that using white colour pencils actually makes the colouring smoother and the paper shinier.

He also showed us some of the colourings that he did with colour pencils. The flowers that he coloured were very beautiful. I had never seen colour pencils having the effect like watercolours. It was unique that he uses colour pencils to colour. When I attended art classes when I was young, we used oil pastels. However, my boys don't like the oil pastels as it stains their hands. I'm still trying to figure out how to get them to like oil pastels. I just read that there is a holder which we can use, but I don't know where to get it. Perhaps in the art supply shop. In the meantime, colour pencils would be a good alternative then.
He shared with us some lines that cartoonists use when they draw cartoons

He used to colour non-stop between 20 - 40 pieces of colouring pages at a time, wearing out the oil pastels in a very short time. He will usually colour the whole picture in one colour. He was very good at handling the oil pastels and "pressing" the oil pastels that the pictures always came out smooth.
