26.10.11 - Colouring Workshop

Artwork by E: 3 years 6 months
Artwork by S: 5 years 1 month

We went to Galeri Petronas at Suria KLCC for a children’s art workshop on Deepavali day. The workshop costs RM12 per child. It was taught by En. Uneh Hasren. He asked the kids to call him ‘Uncle U’, short for Uneh, which is a combination of the word ‘unik’ and  ‘aneh’ in Bahasa Malaysia. He has published 4 colouring books and calls himself “Raja Pensel Warna” (King of colour pencils), which was befitting as his colouring works were very beautiful.

He gave many helpful tips on colouring. Before starting to draw or colour, we had to select either 2 or 3 colours first -  dark and medium or light colour. First, draw using a light colour. To shade, use a dark colour first. Then use the medium, then light colour. He also shared with that using white colour pencils actually makes the colouring smoother and the paper shinier.

He also showed us some of the colourings that he did with colour pencils. The flowers that he coloured were very beautiful. I had never seen colour pencils having the effect like watercolours. It was unique that he uses colour pencils to colour. When I attended art classes when I was young, we used oil pastels. However, my boys don't like the oil pastels as it stains their hands. I'm still trying to figure out how to get them to like oil pastels. I just read that there is a holder which we can use, but I don't know where to get it. Perhaps in the art supply shop. In the meantime, colour pencils would be a good alternative then.
He shared with us some lines that cartoonists use when they draw cartoons

20.8.11 - Drawing outdoors

Artwork by E: 3 years 4 months
Artwork by S: 4 years 11 months

I brought along some large mahjong papers for the kids to draw outdoors when we were at Felda Residence Trolak. We had to keep a watchful eye on the large red ants which kept reappearing after we swept them away.

Was surprised to see him drawing a 3D car. Must have modelled his brother.

4.8.11: Drawing houses by the river

Artwork by S: 4 years 11 months

I sat at the Tanjung Bungah beach and drew the landscape in pencil. When the sun came out, it was too hot to sit at the beach, so I decided to paint in the hotel room instead. However, my art materials got hijacked by the boys again.
S drew a house and a car by the river.
He can hold the brush pretty well now.
E decided to join in to draw and paint

25.7.11 - Painting fishing boats in watercolour

Artwork by E: 3 years 3 months
Artwork by S: 4 years 10 months

S was in the midst of painting some boats when my art materials got hijacked by the boys. This is their first time painting using my art materials, and I noticed that there is a difference when they use good quality brushes and artist watercolour as compared to their own (cheaper) art materials.

He drew using my drawing and a photograph as a reference
