3.1.12 - Tracing from laptop
My posts are a bit jumbled up because I had neglected this blog for some time, and only now starting to work on scanning and organising their many pieces of artwork strewn all over the house and in my computer.
This picture of S tracing from the laptop is from 2 years ago, when he was 5.5 years old. He would decide what picture he wanted to draw, ask me to google some images. He would decide on the picture and trace it. He only needed to trace the same picture one or twice, after that he would commit them to memory and automatically knows how to draw them freehand. He only drew from the laptop for only a short period of time, and after a few times, he stopped tracing. If he needs to draw with reference, he would just look up the image in a book or on the internet and draw by looking at the images. No more tracing.

I bought a pack of sharpie markers and gave an ice-cream tub
and a drawing block to my 6 y.o. son to draw on his own. A few minutes later,
he came up with this. He described it as a fire-engine passing by the countryside
and about to go into a tunnel.
"Army tank in the forest" in watercolour
28 Dec 2011
Artwork by S: 5 years 3 months
This is the first time we are doing painting in the park. I loaned him my artists watercolour paints, palette and paintbrush. I find that it makes a whole lot of difference in the result of his painting when he uses professional materials.

He drew an army tank in the forest |
I verbally guided him on how to paint. This is using wet-on-wet watercolour. He painted the sky by painting water all over the sky area, then dabbing blue paint on top.

He seems to have fairly good control of the brush |

28.11.11 - Drawing a house, elephant and frog
Artwork by E: 3 years 7 months
E drew what he called a "Double storey house" to reflect where he lived in. Inside the house, there was a clock, a lamp, paintings on the wall, the kitchen with a frying pan, tables and chairs and bed. "There are flowers in the garden, which is far away," he asserted.
Can you guess what this is? It is an uncompleted frog from the front angle. It certainly isn't easy to draw a frog. I tried to draw one myself but it turned out funny.

He drew these 2 elephants from observation. He looked at his tiny toy plastic elephant and drew it. For places that he wasn't sure how, I taught him to take his index finger, and trace around (outline) the plastic elephant. Then he drew the shape on the paper. Whenever he was unsure, he would trace his finger around the object.
